31 December 2022|Golfing with gratitude
There's so much information out there about the benefits of speed training that I'm not going to repeat them here. However, if I'm serious about improving my golf then speed is maybe one of the easier gains - or so say all the proponents of faster swings. There are a number of different systems available and you can spend a lot of money on this area. I think "The Stack" plus the swing radar they recommend comes to almost £600! The product I plumped for was more of a bargain basement one called SwingSpeedGolf which I bought from Amazon a few years ago and never got around to using (same old story). I also got an old, basic swing speed monitor called SwingMate from a friend who had moved to a Mevo. This system involves physically changing the swing weights over from light to intermediate to heavy. While that sounds like a bit of a drag, you actually need some rest time between reps so it really isn't a big issue and forces you to take those little breaks.
Why am I doing this? My driver speed has usually averaged around 93-95mph, despite my 6i speed of around 85mph suggesting it should be closer to 100mph. So, something hasn't been translating well with the driver. I would like to get my cruising speed to at least 100mph while knowing that I still have a bit more in the tank when required. There should be tangible benefits on the course if I can hit longer drives as the speed should also translate to my irons, allowing me to hit them better too. I've had the tools for years, but I've never made a regular effort to train for speed and struggled to get above 100mph. That's changing this winter and I plan to use the weighted sticks more consistently in my training. The aim is to get my average driver swing up to 100mph and the full-out swing to 110mph. That should have a considerable impact on my driving distance and also have a knock-on benefit to all other areas of my game too. Shorter second shots should take a bit of pressure off.
Driver swing speed base level: 93-95mph
Target: 100mph cruising, 110mph flat out
