Lesson 1 - the first step

31 December 2022|Golfing with gratitude

Lesson date: 4/11/22

Prior to this lesson, Sandy and I had already had a chat about my game. We discussed where I thought my strengths and weaknesses were and what I thought I needed to work on, so there was a bit of a plan in place before the lessons began. We wanted to have an overview of my swing, but I also wanted to address some recent issues with my driver. Historically I've felt my driving was pretty good. Not the longest, but pretty consistent. However more recently (since improving my iron play) I've been struggling with a two-way miss, hitting it very high with limited run and an increasingly frequent topping of the ball. I had even switched to an 8 degree head to try and get the flight down a bit. We started the lesson hitting a few irons and then hit some driver and 3 wood shots before stopping and having a chat about what he'd seen so far.

Driver: Sandy had immediately seen that there was an issue with my setup. Unconsciously over time, I have allowed the ball to move ever further forward in my stance without really noticing it, resulting in the ball now actually being outside of my left foot. My stance had also become too wide and was preventing me from transferring my weight effectively in the downswing. So this was looking like a relatively easy improvement to make. Narrow the stance and bring the ball back inside my left heel. This had the impact that I needed more loft on the driver, so we adjusted it up to its maximum and went from there. Strike was certainly improved in the studio and we will see how it transfers to the course.

Irons: Sandy was very happy with the takeaway but was concerned with my transition to the downswing. Again, a bit like the driver, the ball had crept too far forward, my weight transfer wasn't as strong as it could be and my hip turn could be better. It wasn't terrible but I need to turn my body faster and there are improvements to make to my sequencing. I've to think more about rotating my hips out of the way and allowing myself to rotate better through the ball.

Conclusion: these seem like quite small issues but believe me, they are much harder to work on than you may think. I've got three weeks or so before my next lesson.
