Full bag review - aims

31 December 2022|Golfing with gratitude

During my lessons, Sandy suggested getting the spec of my irons checked as he was concerned they don’t spin enough. He also wants me to try a thinner grip. From looking at the impact position with the driver, I also appear to be hitting that too low and towards the toe, so we need to get that reviewed too. So, with all of that in mind, I’ve booked myself in for a full bag fitting with SGGT. I've been clear with them that I want to see if I can optimise my existing equipment rather than just being fit for new but also that I will change clubs if I can see the tangible benefit.

SGGT have unparalleled facilities in Scotland, with multiple brands available and the ability to try irons in 4, 6, 8, PW rather than just fitting with a 6 or 7 iron. They can also quickly change grip sizes too. They fitted me for my current wedges and have previously fitted me for woods and irons too (not my current irons or driver though). From my perspective, and using the data from ShotScope, there are a few things I am curious to review.

1. Am I getting the most out of my driver? I really like the TSi3 and it performs pretty well on the course but I know the strike pattern is not optimal. Is this down to my swing or a poor fit?

2. I'm happy with my current 3 wood but confused about the transition to my irons. I've got a 5w which I've been swapping in and out with a 19 hybrid. Then I have a 23 hybrid before going to my 5 iron. I'm not convinced about my gapping here and would like to settle the fairway/hybrid/driving iron debate.

3. Iron to wedge transition. I think my PW / 50 / 54 are too close in carry distance and could be improved. The wedges also feel very different from my irons and I think that can also be improved. They swing weight very differently and I wonder if that is part of the issue. I've added lead tape to my irons to address this and quite like the heavier feel. The Vokeys swing weight at D6 against the irons at D0. I've raised the 7i to D3 and then gone +/- 0.5 swing weights up and down the bag (5i D2, PW D4.5) and like the way this makes the set feel but we will see what SGGT say.

4. Iron spin. This is something Sandy want's me to have checked as he thinks my 6i spin is too low currently. He thinks it may be that the loft needs to be changed or it may be that the irons simply aren't right for me. He noticed the spin issue before I changed the swing weight so again we will see what SGGT say.
