31 December 2022|Thoughts about

I've just started reading 1984 by George Orwell and I was struck by a comment in the introduction. 'The tragedy of Orwell's life' wrote his friend and one time editor, Cyril Connolly, 'is that when at last he had achieved fame and success he was a dying man and new it. He had fame and was too ill to leave his room, money and nothing to spend it on....he tasted the bitterness of dying'
I thought this was quite interesting. It's a bit like all those other sayings such as "You don't want to be the richest person in the cemetery" or "You can't take it with you". I think the difference here is that I don't know if Orwell "wanted" fame and success. The comments obviously weren't written by him. Others may say that we prepare for death from the moment we are born and when it comes we should be ready for it. Unfortunately, we will never know what else Orwell might have had to say, but he certainly left behind an impressive body of work.
To be continued.....
