1 January 2023|Golfing with gratitude
Happy New Year to anyone reading. May your drives be long and straight and all your putts drop.
It's been a tricky couple of weeks with weather and festive celebrations getting in the way of much golf but I have been able to get a few games. Just before Christmas I was lucky to get a round on the Old Course and on Christmas Eve a round on the Jubilee. Then on Hogmanay a further round on the Jubilee. The condition of both courses is excellent considering the weather we have had.
Most recent rounds have been bounce games or matches between friends and non-counting due to gimmies but I have generally played well and the rounds are recorded in my ShotScope database and with GolfDataLab. However, there were a couple of general play scores submitted too and they saw me end the year with a WHS Index of 4.6, down from 4.8 when I started this blog. A nice way to end the year. There are a couple of low scores falling off with my next two counting rounds though, so I'll need to keep playing well to retain the 4.6 level.
I've continued to work on improving my driver strike and that seems to be paying off with more fairways hit and fewer silly shots being thrown away. I'm also starting to build confidence in my new shot shape and starting to expect to see a slight draw. I don't quite have the confidence to start the ball far enough right though but it's coming! The improvements to my short game mentioned in previous posts have continued and my scrambling has been good.
I've switched my putter back to my old Toulon Atlanta and have had great results. I've also been experimenting with and without a line on the ball. I think I prefer to use the line for short puts only, just to give me a bit more confidence in my aim. The Scotty Cameron Fastback will be up for sale as soon as I get another eBay discount code! If my new irons come in soon then the old ones will be listed too, along with my 5 wood and 4 hybrid to try and recoup some of the cost!
My next lesson is later this week and I will be asking Sandy to review my grip and transition progress but to mainly focus on the driver. My strike has improved but I know there is more to go for. ShotScope definitely shows this as an area for improvement - both for fairways hit and for length lost through poor strike. I know that confidence breeds on itself, so hopefully we can see some progress here. No driver fitting until I'm happy that I'm hitting the centre more consistently.
